The Republic of Ecuador has a Representative Democracy. Within this system it is divided into three branches. These branches are executive, legislative, and judicial (Ecuador Government Overview). The President is Rafael Correa. He controls the executive branch and represents the country. He is also Commander-in-Chief of the army. Presidential terms last four years and Rafael Correa has been in office since January 15, 2007 (Ecuador Government Overview). The congress is responsible for passing laws, levies taxes, and approves International Treaties (Ecuador Government Overview). The judicial system has a system of courts including the Supreme Court. Voting is a little stricter in Ecuador. You have to vote from the time your 18 to 65 (Ecuador Government Overview). The illiterate and seniors over 65 have the option to vote but are not forced to. Active members of the military are not allowed to vote either (Ecuador Government Overview). The economy of Ecuador relies mainly on the exports. In 1998 the GDP even reached $20 billion (Ecuador Government Overview).
